Overview

ASA’s Oral Exam Guide Series is an excellent study tool for students and instructors alike. Arranged in a question-and-answer format, this comprehensive guide lists the questions most likely to be asked by examiners and provides succinct, ready responses. Use it when you’re gearing up for the Practical Exam or as a general refresher. FAA references are provided throughout for further study.

This tenth edition of the Instrument Pilot Oral Exam Guide by Michael D. Hayes has been updated throughout to reflect current regulations, procedures, FAA references and checkride practices. New information has been added for BasicMed, weather services including Graphical Forecast Analysis (GFA), ICAO flight plans, flight simulator (FFS), Flight Training Device (FTD), Advanced Training Device (ATD) and transponder requirements (such as ADS-B, TIS-B and FIS-B).

This guide also includes a chapter dedicated to scenario-based questions, by contributing author Arlynn McMahon. Student responses to these “open-ended” questions demonstrate an understanding of the big picture and convey the practical application of what is important and why.

The Instrument Pilot Oral Exam Guide is the comprehensive guide to prepare you for the FAA checkride.

Helicopter pilots should use both this Instrument Pilot Oral Exam Guide and the Helicopter Pilot Oral Exam Guide by Ryan Dale.

ASA ORAL EXAM GUIDE INSTRUMENT RATING

I wish I could have order this book way earlier in my IFR training and study the content instead of waiting the last minute. Ordering from Aircraft Spruce was very easy and simple. The Customer Support was very Helpful with my order change request. Got the book fairly quickly within a week of online ordering.

The only stars are because the paper book is fantastic. The e-book (and app) wouldnt be worth it if they were free. I highly recommend these books to everyone. I read them cover to cover. I also highly recommend people cover up the answer until they answer the question, and take notes in the book. I wasted money on the e-book twice, once through the Aircraft Spruce, which redirects you to the ASA website (but the aircraft spruce computers only work bank hours so if you order on Saturday you get it on Monday... an e-book), and once through kobo. In both cases its an .acsm file which is DRM protected. If you buy from ASA you are forced to create an adobe account and use Adobe Digital Editions which is the worlds worst e-reader app. I could never get to work on android, I got it to work on windows.   If you buy from kobo their app is slightly better. In both cases you have no hope of taking notes on the e-book. Maybe kindle is better, I wasnt going to buy it a third time. I just wanted to take notes like I do on a paper book... Calibre and some searching solved my problem. I wasted money on the android app, the buttons on the main menu were blank (no text), if I got lucky and clicked the correct button then I could study what I wanted.
