Pretty great tool, but if you bump the spring... I put a small zip ties around the glass portion to solve that problem!

As others have said the threads are to big and you need to run them through a 8 x 1.5mm die to get them to screw in correctly.

The ones I purchased many years ago are great. No problems screwing them in the spark plug holes. I dont know about the latest versions and the present day quality control.
The main things Im disappointed with is, the lack of parts for them especially the rubber gaskets, as they dont seem to last especially when exposed to oil.

Used this dehydrator plug to replace the ones that came with the Tanis kit. Far superior quality, easy to refill dehydrator with fresh desiccant when needed. Definitely recommend this for engine preservation.

It dehydrates well. The plastic base could be more robust, and the metal clips will pop off easily if youre trying to thread it in by hand. I find that a spark plug socket used by hand is the best to keep it from coming apart during installation / removal to bake out the desiccant

Ive used two different sets of these plugs and both sets fit so tightly that I couldnt turn them all the way in. I used an 18mm x 1.5mm pitch thread die to cut down the threads and the plugs fit tight against the gasket. After just a couple weeks, I can tell by the color of the desiccant beads that they seal much better than when new.

These plugs threaded ends are not accurately cast and will break if forced all the way in to seat in the spark plug boss. BUT there is a workable fix that is very effective. I use these plugs in my Taylorcrafts overhauled C85. As received the threads are oversize, the fit is excessively tight and hand threading is nearly impossible. On their first use, one of them broke off when almost fully seated screwed in the cylinder. A sharp knife wedged into the plastic extracted it. I then purchased n 18 MM thread cutting die, not a rethreading die but one for original cutting of new threads. Using this die, and an open end wrench I first removed the rubber gasket from each plug then holding the dessicant plug with my left hand, not a vise, I carefully screwed the die all the way on. You could see it cutting the plastic threads as it progressed. After the first cut I repeated it four more times using only my hand. Every plug, all eight of them, will now easily screw in by hand with a precise fit and fit all the way in to compress the plugs gasket, sealing it to the cylinder. If you do this, they work great. Every week or two weeks, I check them and if they are turning white, I change the dessicant. Very easily done now that they fit so well. I would have given these plugs 5 stars if I did not have to rethread each one, but it was simple, easy to do, cost effective and it works.

I like using these if Im doing maintenance on my airplane that might take several weeks to complete. The plugs are easy to regenerate at low temp in a toaster oven (I remove the silica gel to regenerate and then pour it back in when done). The units do not thread in very well, though - even on a new cylinder. Seems like I might get one thread or so engaged, but that is good enough to work well (doesnt seem to have a significant leak that causes fast deterioration of the desiccant.

Plugs work fairly well, only they dont screw in as easy as they should. I had mine in my engine for a year, and the silica slowly turned pink showing they were absorbing water vapor.
It only took one hour in the oven to bring back the dark blue color....ready for use again.
They are kind of fragile...handle with care.

I dont give the 5 stars only because my A&P had a little trouble installing them due to the rubber part doesnt turning easy. My husband had those installed years ago in another engine and he didnt have trouble. I dont understand.

I like the concept, but the plastic threads are too tight and make installation difficult. I worry that these will break and didnt feel comfortable threading them all of the way in.

As others have indicated, I had to re-run the threads with an 18x1.5mm die to make them fit into the engine. The plugs are filled with blue cobalt chloride indicator beads which is poisonous and forbidden in the EU. I replaced it with white silica with occasional yellow indicator beads. Better job and less hazardous.
The two straps dont hold very tight, basically a bent wire stuck in a hole with nothing holding it in there, just friction.

These plugs work but they are glass. If you hit one by accident, the glass breaks and you have to spend another $20 to replace the entire unit. They need to be made out of plastic instead of glass.

Will not screw into holes due to the threads being cast and not actually machined. Construction does not allow fitting a socket over top to tighten--and you cant really hand tighten much because once its going in the hole, you can only handle the top part (from which you cant spin it in with the bad threads). Purchased just prior to leaving town and I could not install them before I left for the season. Very disgusted with the product.

I use these in my Taylorcrafts C85. All comments about thread issues are correct. The threads are poorly cast and not finished. Simply screwing one in by hand, it snapped off leaving the entire threaded base in the new Superior Millenium cylinder spark plug hole. Fortunately, using a sharp knife, we wedged the blade sideways into the plastic threads and threaded it back out. It was not easy, but it worked. Went to the local machine shop supply house and purchased an American manufactured 18MM die with one side flat so it would travel the full distance of the threaded plug base. Carefully and gently screwed the die onto the threads of each dessicant plug and off, maybe 10-15 times. The sharp, American, die recut those cast threads and now the plugs screw in by hand and do not wobble. A nice precise fit. Becasue the plastic is soft, relative to steel, several on/off applications with the new die were necessary, but it did work. The dessicant itself is easy to replace and I now have two sets of plugs so I can replace the dessicant at home. At the unheated but dry hangar, I exchange them and all done in minutes. The kitchen microwave does refresh the dessicant in a couple of minutes but I often just replace it with fresh from those little vinyl packets from A.S. which makes it really easy and it seems to last slightly longer than the microwaved dessicant. . We also tape a plastic bottle to the exhaust pipe with dessicant inside and that helps too. A borescope revealed no cylinder rust.

Two comments on these Dehydrator Plugs, and I see by the others submitted that everyone else has experienced the same problems.
1. Arrived already pink.
2. The threads are absolutely terrible. I could only get about 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn on each plug. I didnt have an 18mm die to chase the threads so I wasted way too much time messing with a jewelers file on each one before they would fit. And yes, my regular Champions will screw in by hand all the way to the copper gasket, so its not a case of dirty threads. Absolutely no quality control on these very marginal items two stars are generous.

The dehydrators arrived in individual small plastics bags. The silica had all turned pink, ie, moisture saturated. Sent complaint email to Spruce - got no response. Threads are not quite right - unable to get but 2-3 turns of plugs into cylinders.

The design could be a lot better. Its like it is from the 1950s. Glass tube, which can break if the socket slips or the fit is tight and it gets torqued on. They are hard to reassemble after replacing the desiccant. Especially when you have 12 to do. A better design would be a clear plastic tube with threads on either end and perhaps even a metal threaded base to screw into the spark plug hole.

All 8 arrived pink. Thought that was the color BEFORE moisture saturation (logical, since these were NEW, right?)...wrong! So I took these gizmos all apart, baked the beads, got all of them blue...and then the REAL fun began: reassembly. TOTAL hassle, very hard to do. As youre GUNCHING down to get the 90deg ends of the clips back into the holes in the body, the glass tube cocks sideways, slips out of the body, and beads go flying EVERYWHERE. As a reviewer said, this cap&clip setup is a poor design.

Very poor thread fit between bushing and desiccant plug. Only slight side pressure will result in the plug pulling out of bushing. Not sure why this should be a challenge, but very disappointed.

I have to agree with the negative reviews here: Ive broken two of them already by brushing or bumping against them while working on the engine. They shatter and silica goes everywhere. I also moved them all to the lower plugs because I was worried about them breaking and most of them fill with oil on the bottom. The rubber seals that holds the sintered screens in place tend to be loose and undersized so that when you take them apart to change the gel, the screens are hard to keep in place. Again, I can see the screen failing to do its job and gel falling into the cylinder. Going to replace these with Mil Spec plastic assemblies.

While this product does its job, it is so fragile that risk of breakage is unreasonable. Changing the dessicant requires removal of the plug, which is made of plastic. The glass globe which contains the dessicant is held on by a flimsy clip, over which you have to set a plug socket wrench to install or remove. So far, Ive broken off one base in the cylinder head, and broken one globe. At the very least, the globe needs to be made from shatter resistant plastic. The retaining clip mechanism needs to be re-designed, and the threaded base should be made from metal.
