Overview

Micro Vortex Generators from Micro Aerodynamics, Inc. are available for a wide range of aircraft and can reduce stall speed, improve aileron response, improve cross wind control, and reduce landing and takeoff roll. The kits consist of vortex generators mounted on the wings, the horizontal stabilizer, and the vertical stabilizer. The generators are manufactured under FAA/PMA from 6063T6 aluminum and are curved to fit the contour of the wing. Included in the kits are installation tools, detailed drawings and instructions, templates for positioning VG's, spares,Loctite Depend adhesive and all the materials needed for the easy one-day installation.

Q&A

Please note, Aircraft Spruce's personnel are not certified aircraft mechanics and can only provide general support and ideas, which should not be relied upon or implemented in lieu of consulting an A&P or other qualified technician. Aircraft Spruce assumes no responsibility or liability for any issue or problem which may arise from any repair, modification or other work done from this knowledge base. Any product eligibility information provided here is based on general application guides and we recommend always referring to your specific aircraft parts manual, the parts manufacturer or consulting with a qualified mechanic.

Q: Does the VG kit for the Seneca II include an STC?

Yes, all the Micro vortex generator kits for certified aircraft will include the STC. Only the vortex generator kits for experimental aircraft will not include the STC.

Q: Regarding the vortex generator for the Piper PA-28. What is included with the kit? Can you do them in customer color, specifically white? How much will it reduce stall speed?

The kit for the PA28 contains 3 different part numbers for different locations on the aircraft. There are 4 extra of each part number (12 total) included as spares with the purchase of the kit. Please note that the painting option is available for an additional charge per color, and we require the paint name and color code number to paint. To paint the parts "white", this charge applies, and we need the code information. The vortex generators can reduce stall speed by 5 MPH.

Q: What is the weight increase with the kit for the PA22? What are the numbers for the reduction on takeoff and landing rolls?

Per the supplier: "With the installation of Micro VGs on the PA22-150, there is a reduction in stall speed, but change to the take-off weight. The takeoff and landing distances are reduced due to the reduction in stall speed. Since we did not certify new performance charts for the flight manual, I do not have exact numbers for you. For take-off, the stall speed at gross with flaps UP is 53 mph (instead of 58), so the plane will fly at 54 mph, which allows for a shorter takeoff. For landing, the demonstrated stall speed with flaps full is 47 mph (instead of 53 mph). This will allow for slower approach (1.3 x 47 mph) at 61 mph at gross which translates into shorter landing distance."

Q: Can I install the micro VG's myself or must they be installed by my A&P? In other words, are they considered a minor or major modification by the FAA?

This is an STC'd product and is considered a major modification. Yes, this will need to be installed by an A&P mechanic.

Q: Will the VGs increase useful load and how much?

No gross weight or useful load change on the Aztec model with Micro AeroDynamics VG kit.

Q: Do any of these go on the elevator?

Micro VG kit per STC SA00376SE has parts installed on the wings and vertical tail.

Q: Does the vortex generator increase any useful load on the PA28-140? What are the benefits?

These can reduce stall speed, improve aileron response, improve cross wind control, and reduce landing and takeoff roll. They do not increase useful load.

Q: Is this available for the PA32-RT-300T? I know it says PA32…

No the PA32-RT-300T has a t-tail and the vendor does not offer a kit for that configuration.

Q: Regarding the kit for PA 18 . Does the kit contain vortex generator for the tail ? What does each mean? Do not 1 set contain vortex generators for both wings (and the tail)?

Yes this kit comes with enough VG's for the wings and horizontal stab.
